President’s Message

Hattori Paper has been manufacturing and selling household paper such as toilet paper for a long time, starting with handmade washi paper, paper tape and Tanabata paper. However, when faced with environmental problems such as global warming, we started developing products with the perspective of how to pass on beautiful oceans, rivers and lakes to the next generation. As one of the measures to prevent global warming, reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) is considered an urgent task, and many countries and companies are focusing on reforestation activities to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and increase carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption sources.
On the other hand, Hattori Paper believes it is important to protect the "underwater forests*1" formed by seaweed and phytoplankton in the sea, which are said to absorb more than twice as much carbon dioxide (CO2) through photosynthesis as tropical rainforests. When seawater becomes cloudy due to pollution of the aquatic environment, it hinders the photosynthesis of seaweed and phytoplankton, leading to a decrease in underwater forests and ultimately a decrease in carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption sources. It is noteworthy that 60% to 70% of this pollution is caused by domestic wastewater discharged from homes, with the largest proportion coming from kitchens. With this in mind, we wondered if we could use our strengths as a manufacturer of household paper to make household wastewater even a little cleaner. With this in mind, we wanted to develop a product that would help prevent the pollution of water resources and contribute to preventing global warming.

Japan has three major closed waters*2: Tokyo Bay, Ise Bay, and the Seto Inland Sea, and the water quality has not been improved. Hattori Paper is a company in Ehime Prefecture, which faces the Seto Inland Sea. Our company was guilty of polluting the Seto Inland Sea with wastewater from our factories during Japan's high economic growth period in the 1970s, and this is something we must never forget. We are grateful to the Seto Inland Sea, Japan's seas, and the seas of the world, for the many blessings we receive from them, and we are developing products to protect these environments. The first is "kitchen paper" that contains non-wood bagasse (waste from sugarcane squeezing) pulp and unbleached pulp. By creating our unique uneven wrinkles, this product has excellent oil absorption, water absorption, and wiping properties. We are not only using it during cooking, but also wiping off residue before washing dishes, so we are raising awareness that it will not put a strain on the treatment of domestic wastewater that flows into the sewer system. The second is the commercialization of "Katazuke Poi," which disposes of household waste oil and leftover cooking juices without pouring them down the drain. The third is the use of "electrolyzed baking soda water" and "electrolyzed alkaline water" in the development of cleaning products that remove dirt without using synthetic surfactants found in detergents. Our electrolyzed water business is our greatest feature, and we are proud that it can contribute to various aspects, including the global environment and people's health. In addition, in recent years, we have been developing products that incorporate our own technology into sheet-type cleaners that make cleaning easy, in the context of an era in which "time saving" is the most important thing. Hattori Paper will roll out these product groups, including lifestyle suggestions, throughout Japan, and aim to have as many people as possible use them with easy-to-understand names such as "Itsumo no" (usual) and "Chokkoto" (a little). We are convinced that doing so will definitely contribute to preventing global warming. In the future, Hattori Paper's mission is to spread our products not only in Japan but all over the world, and to contribute to the global environment, and we will continue to work hard every day.
